Scherzo in La Maggiore

for orchestra (2020)

2 flutes—2 oboes—2 clarinets—2 bassoons—2 horns—2 trumpets—3 trombones—timpani—strings

World premiere: Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington, NZ, 30 October 2021. Orchestra Wellington was conducted by Marc Taddei.

Scherzo in La Maggiore is a short work for a Classical-sized orchestra. In its rather silly way, it is a sincere homage to Beethoven, whose 250th anniversary was upset by the COVID-19 pandemic. The music takes one motif from the seventh symphony, and leads it in a slightly different direction from the original. It was composed in July 2020 in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland.
